    Program overview

    The Medical Assistant program prepares you to perform clinical duties include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, assisting with minor procedures and administering medications as directed by a physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes. Students will also have hands-on clinical/practicum hours in the ambulatory setting. The courses are hybrid; some in person, and some online.

     

    Upon completion, students earn a 38-credit-hour Cert B. This program aligns with NCES CIP Code 51.0801(Medical Assistant), a program that prepares individuals, under the supervision of physicians, to provide medical office administrative services and perform clinical duties including patient intake and care, routine diagnostic and recording procedures, pre-examination and examination assistance, and the administration of medications and first aid. Includes instruction in basic anatomy and physiology; medical terminology; medical law and ethics; patient psychology and communications; medical office procedures; and clinical diagnostic, examination, testing, and treatment procedures.

    CERTIFICATIONS: Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) through National Healthcare Association (NHA)

    ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS: Admissions requirements for WIT are a high school GPA of 2.0 or higher, or an official GED diploma. High School students must be within 3 semesters of high school graduation, as students must possess a High School diploma or equivalent to sit for the certification exam.

    Washburn Tech’s multi‑million‑dollar Regional Simulation Center (RSC) gives students an immersive, real‑world health care training experience. The facility includes four high‑tech simulation bays that mirror acute care settings, along with five advanced CAE mannequins ranging from newborn to geriatric patients. Students also train in a fully equipped two‑bed operating room and a modern rehabilitation center, all designed to prepare them with the skills today’s health care employers expect.

    Medical Assistant Coursework

    The Medical Assistant certificate includes a carefully structured set of required courses that guide you from foundational knowledge to advanced clinical skills. Early classes introduce essential concepts such as First Aid and CPR, Medical Terminology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, and Nutrition, giving you the groundwork needed to understand the human body and the language of healthcare.

    As you progress, the curriculum expands into more specialized areas, including Medication Administration, Principles of Pharmacology, Fundamentals of Phlebotomy, and Patient Care. Each course builds on the last, creating a clear, connected learning experience that prepares you for real‑world responsibilities in clinics, hospitals, and other healthcare settings.

    CLINICAL ASPECTS OF MEDICAL ASSISTANT SKILLS

    • Build the essential knowledge and hands‑on skills needed to succeed as a Medical Assistant. This course covers patient care, infection control, screenings, vital signs, lab work, minor procedures, and a wide range of specialty clinical tasks.

    PRINCIPALS OF PHARMACOLOGY

    • Learn the core principles of pharmacology, including how drugs interact with the body, major drug classifications, mechanisms of action, and the therapeutic use of common medications.

    MEDICAL ADMINISTRATIVE ASPECTS

    • Provides an introduction to the administrative skills needed for a medical office. Students learn how to maintain medical records (both paper and electronic), manage appointments, and perform routine office duties.

    PATIENT CARE I PRACTICUM

    • This course allows the Medical Assistant student to transition knowledge and skills learned to this point into the clinical setting. The student will complete 90 hours in the clinical setting.
