New Salon Opens to the Public

November 1, 2016

Topeka, Kan. – Washburn Tech’s Academy of Cosmetology Salon will officially open to the public at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 109 SW 29th St., Topeka, in the South City Plaza. A brief ceremony, celebrating the salon, will begin at 9 a.m.

Washburn Tech began offering the cosmetology program in August after a national beauty school chain closed all of its locations including its operation in Topeka. A second national beauty school chain closed its doors in Topeka earlier this month. Washburn Tech’s Academy of Cosmetology is now the only college in town that is training students to perform a variety of services including haircutting, hairstyling and hair coloring in addition to manicures and pedicures.

“We are excited about the Academy of Cosmetology, which provides a new outlet for creativity in our community,” said Coco. “Previously, the cost of the education served as a significant barrier for students who wanted to enter the field. Now, thanks to this program, we are able to provide a quality education at half the price of private institutions while offering the community an outstanding salon experience at a very reasonable cost.”

Washburn Tech’s 45-credit-hour cosmetology program includes classroom and clinical instruction totaling 1,500 hours as required by the Kansas Board of Cosmetology. Adult students can complete the program in as little as 10 months while high school students can complete in 24 months. Upon successful completion, students are prepared to earn a license from the Kansas Board of Cosmetology.
