Recycled Rides Gives Away 14th Vehicle

October 23, 2015

Topeka, Kan. – Leroy Lattimore, of Topeka, believes he is on the road to a better life thanks to a new set of wheels. Lattimore is the latest recipient of a refurbished vehicle provided through Washburn Tech’s Recycled Rides program. He received the keys during a special presentation on Wednesday, October 21, on the Washburn Tech campus.

Lattimore says he will use the car, a silver 2009 Ford Focus donated by Geico Insurance, to go back and forth between home and work. Up to this point, he has relied on public transportation and expects this gift to be life changing.

“There are no words that can express my gratitude,” said Lattimore. “I’ve been down, and I’ve made a few mistakes in my lifetime. This is going to put me one step closer to bettering myself and getting back into school, so thank you.”

The woman, who nominated Lattimore for the Recycled Rides program, says Lattimore works full-time and recently attended school to earn his high school diploma. She writes, “He is always positive, even when times get tough for him. His family home burned down when he was younger, and he has helped his parents and brother to recover from this loss by providing both emotional and financial support. He would be very grateful if chosen to receive a car through this program.”

Washburn Tech’s Recycled Rides program partners auto students with instructors and professional mentors in the community to refurbish vehicles, which are awarded to individuals and families in need. Local businesses and individuals also donate parts and supplies to get the vehicles on the road again. This car becomes Washburn Tech’s 14th Recycled Ride.
