Washburn Tech Students Build Holiday Spirit

December 1, 2014Topeka, Kan. – For the second year in a row Washburn Tech is turning into Santa’s Workshop to make toys for children in need this holiday season. Washburn Tech Student Government Association is hosting Toys for Tots Build Day beginning at 8:00 a.m., Saturday, December 6, in the Cabinet and Mill lab in Building L at 5724 S.W. Huntoon St., Topeka, Kan.

Students, technical instructors and volunteers plan to make wooden step stools, hobby horses and yo-yos. Last year, the effort produced more than 550 hand-made toys for local children in need. Volunteers from the public are welcome to participate, however children under fourteen must be accompanied by an adult. Everyone is encouraged to wear something elfish.

“This is a win-win project for our students, staff and the community,” said Johnny Lemon, Washburn Tech cabinet/mill technical instructor and Washburn Tech Student Government Association co-sponsor. “It’s a way to put our hands where our hearts are and make sure that all kids have something special under the tree this holiday season.”
